After reading Chapter 4 in the text and the article “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema,”think about who the Nacirema are. Then, answer the following questions:

• In observing a society, how should an anthropologist, acting as an outsider or external observer, approach or understand what he or she is witnessing?
• This article is a classic and, therefore, dated. Look at some of the practices in our society today. Choose one cultural practice that is considered “normal” in our culture. You can take the example from any sphere of life, including sports, entertainment, shopping, dining, or others.
• Next, describe that cultural practice the way Miner describes it. How would the description of the cultural practice change the way our culture and people are viewed by an outsider?
