- A heat exchanger is used to warm apple cider using steam as the heat source. The cider is heated from an initial temperature of 4°C to a final temperature of 65°C. The steam enters the heat exchanger as 50% quality steam and exits as water condensate at 85°C. Calculate the mass of steam required to heat 150 kg of cider. (For the cider, assume the Cp=3.651 kJ/kg°C, and latent heat=280.18 kJ/kg.) (5 marks)
This is what I did, but I'm not sure if its correct! I had a hard time understanding what i was doing calculations for...
Heat of Fusion = 85’C x Csp (4.18) = 355.90 kJ/ kg
Heat of water evaporation = 27(saturated vapor) x 85’C = 2296 kJ/Kg
Q= hf + Steam quality x hfg
Q = 355.90 + (.500)X(2296.0)
= 1503.9 kJ/kg – 355.90 kj/kg
= 1148 kJ/kg
Qm= (150kg)x(3.651)x(65-4)
Q= 3406.65 kJ
Mass = 3406.65kJ/1148kJ/Kg
Mass = 29.099 kg
Therefore the mass of steam required to heat 150 kg of cider is 29.1kg.
