A new life form (Organism X = OX) is discovered in space and is being studied here on earth. Surprisingly, it is found that OX uses proteins made of amino acids to run its biochemistry, just like earth's life forms. Imagine that you are doing experiments to unravel the details of protein synthesis in OX. You provide cells of OX with radioactive amino acids for a brief period of time, and then transfer the cells to medium with unlabeled amino acids (a pulse labeling experiment). After a period of time in unlabeled medium, you isolate proteins from the OX cells and cut the proteins into fragments with digestive enzymes like trypsin and chymotrypsin. Examining C-terminal (carboxy-terminal) and N-terminal (amino-terminal) fragments, you notice that the latter have much more radioactive label than the former. What does this allow you to conclude concerning protein synthesis in OX. Explain your reasoning.
