Human service professionals face daily demands that’s calls for significant attributes to obtain for successful service. Three eminent characteristics of human service professionals are to be loving, maintain boundaries and consistent flexibility. Without these primary elements, serving others is a challenge.

A common attribute that is shared among various human service providers is love. The intent to operate as a human service professional is not to gain financial success, but to, above anything, love people. This characteristic parallels to 1 Peter 4:8, “Above all, have fervent and unfailing love for one another” (Amplified, 1954/2017). Loving people includes empathy and compassion. There are numerous times when a human service professional will hear troubling news within the professional and personal life, but love must prevail. It is a selfless act to show towards others on both good and bad days. Jesus shows an example of compassion in Matthew 14:14 after He had heard troubling news, “When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt [profound] compassion for them and healed their sick” (Amplified, 1954/2017). This scripture is a constant and personal reminder to faithfully love different walks of life with sincere and selfless intentions. This is a personal strength that has grown throughout the years as a public school teacher.

Creating flexibility to help meet the needs is imperative just as Duncan (2009) stated in the interview. Different people have different needs and all do not fit a one way solution. Availability, time, resources and operating within multiple job titles are some of the components that require flexibility. 1 Peter 4:10 states, “Just as each one of you has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace”(Amplified, 1954/2017). Hence, this Christian aspect reflects the idea of human service professionals to conduct as good stewards in order to be flexible.

Establishing and maintaining boundaries is an attribute that I will personally continue to work on. In Dr. Corsini’s interview, Director Hamlette explains that it’s healthy to leave work at work and to not take it home, especially if you have other roles to operate in the home setting (2015). If not cautious, the passion of helping others will rob the enjoyment of other personal relationships. There needs to be a balance to maintain healthy relationships and refrain from becoming burnt out. It is helpful to remember that even Jesus withdrew himself from the large crowds at times to help Him keep a balance with life on earth.

I believe that the three most prominent characteristics of human service professionals should be a serving attitude, empathy, and flexibility (Duncan & Williams, 2009). I feel that these characteristics should also be desirable for Christians as well. Having a serving attitude allows us to serve others in many different ways, and as Christians we should have a serving attitude. We should also want to have empathy as well so that we can "empathize with them and not sympathize" (Duncan, 2009). Michelle Duncan (2009) stated that it is important to have empathy, but not sympathy, because those are two very different things. Lastly, flexibility should also be something we strive for as Christians. Having flexibility allows us to be able to take on new challenges or allows us to go down the different paths God has planned for us. I think that all three of these characteristics should be desired as Christians and as human service professionals as well.

Scripture that comes to mind when talking about empathy is Romans 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those that weep". This verse shows that we should have empathy with one another and care about one another. A piece of scripture that comes to my mind when talking about flexibility is Colossians 3:2 "Set your mind on thing above, not on things that are on Earth". This verse shows us that we should focus more on God, and less on the things on Earth. So, we need to be willing to give up things on Earth for Him, and become more flexible.

I feel that out of these three characteristics, the one I need to work on the most is flexibility. Sometimes I feel that I am not always flexible and susceptible to change. I think I need to be more open to all types of change. I feel that I already have a servant's heart and attitude, and empathy.

The three most important features that can be adopted for competent human service professional: empathy, flexibility and loyalty. As Michell Duncan noted, sympathy is an important feature of people who work legally with people, especially in the field of people management, and allows a person to take into account the suffering of others and anxiety (Corsini). As a professional of human service, there will be many discussions and stories that the client may like. Romans 12:15 states “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn”. The ability to understand the feelings and feelings of the client in relation to his circumstances can enable him to overcome difficulties. Empathy is a basic skill that allows humanitarian experts to see the world through their eyes or others (Martin, 2018).

This is important because the client may be more open and willing to participate, because he understands that you understand him and sympathize with him during annoying events. Empathy is a protected place where your clients can speak openly without feeling condemnation. A person working in human administrations must be natural, tolerant, attentive, understanding, and above all firm. Packages are not only loyalty to the activity itself, but also to the people with whom you work. Customers seek help in various problems, and vice versa, when someone helps them deliver themselves or transfer them to another person. Being predictable and consistent, it affects the people you serve and can pay because they can respond better to you and the departments that provide them. Matthew 26:33 states, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will”. This scripture shows devotion and duty, in spite of everything that may happen. As a Christian, it is important that you remain faithful to God, for he will organize everything you can do and will never bomb you. In short, sustainability is a huge organization in human departments where everything can change in an instant. People are not great, and change is inevitable. Thus, knowledge and adaptability can help make activity a little easier. Philippians 4:13 state “I can do all this through him who gives me strength”. God calls us to survive all without exception. God will never give us anything we cannot do. If you accept this and realize that you are fully prepared to change under any circumstances, progress will be smooth.

I see myself having all three of these characteristics. However, I can improve upon being more flexible. It’s easy to get comfortable with a routine and stick to it. Having to change things up abruptly or with short notice can sometimes cause a little bit of anxiety.
