Some
important
information
&
changes
in
the
6th
edition:

  •   There should be 2 spaces after periods that end a sentence in the body of the paper.

  •   The number of authors that must be listed on the references page is now 7 and you no longer use et al. on the references page.

  •   The preferred font is Times New Roman 12pt.

  •   The paper should be double-spaced.

  •   There should be 1-inch margins on all sides of the document.

  •   The method and level of headings is simplified in the new edition.

  •   Both the page number and running head should be located in the header of the

paper so it appears on each page.

?  5-6 pages excluding the cover page and reference page. With a cover page and references, the end product will be 7-8 pages.

How many sources?  6 total sources; 5 academic sources are required (journals, books, or book chapters) and 1 popular press source can be used.

What style?  APA style, 12 point font, 1 inch margins (See sample APA paper in Blackboard)

How do I turn in the final draft?  Please submit the final paper draft to SafeAssign ahead of the deadline.  If the SafeAssign report flags significant problems, then you’ll have time to revise.

Can I write in first person?  No.  Write your paper as an objective researcher.  So, do not use first person pronouns “I,” “Me,” “We,” etc.

Can I include my opinion?  This assignment is not a persuasive document, so you don’t need to take a position or defend a position.  Instead, strictly summarize what has been written about your topic and end with a potential research question for further investigation.

Things to include in the Introduction

ü  Introduce your topic in an interesting way

ü  Provide a brief explanation of your theory/concept/topics

ü  Include a clear purpose statement (tell concisely what the literature review is about).

ü  Provide a rationale for why this topic is important to study.  Cite a source.  What have other researchers asked about your topic’s importance?

ü  Preview the structure/main points of the paper (this is your transition into the body of your paper).

Things to include in the Body

ü  Have a clear organization pattern for your main points. Three is a good number of main points for this length paper. Consider using subheadings.

ü  Discuss the articles that fit within your main point.  Include the basics of the article such as the type of study, data collection methods, and major findings.

ü  Develop a clear transition into the next main point.  Consider how the next topic fits with the previous topic.

ü  Repeat this pattern until your main points have been fleshed out.

Things to include in the Conclusion

ü  Restate the importance of your topic.

ü  Provide a list of limitations of studying this topic.  What is hard about it?  Here, cite sources.  What do other authors discuss as being difficult about studying the topic?

ü  Discuss future directions for studying this topic.  Cite sources.  What do other authors suggest we should study about this topic in the future?  Are there existing gaps in the research or gaps in our knowledge of the topic?

ü  Propose your own research question.

Things to include in the References Page

ü  Cite all sources used in the paper

ü  Place in alphabetical order

ü  Follow APA guidelines

ü  Don’t forget to label the Header as References

ü  Don’t forget to use a hanging indent (every line after the first line of the entry is indented)

ü  Don’t forget to double space all entries

Editing Tips

ü  READ YOUR PAPER OUT LOUD (you’ll catch lots of mistakes and unclear sentence structure)

ü  READ your paper again.

ü  CHECK all use of APA

ü  GO To the Writing Center for Input

ü  BRING a strong draft to the peer editing workshop

ü  Place in alphabetical order
