Internet memes are a fun communication tool frequently seen in social media. These memes are a lot like marketing materials in that they often rely on images and text headlines. The main difference is that instead of compelling you to purchase a good or service, they have a goal of making you smile and laugh.

What is an internet meme? If you're unfamiliar with the concept, a simple web search asking that question will certainly provide a number of descriptions and examples. If, however, you're looking for a more formal definition, the author of the 2014 book, Memes in Digital Culture, provides examples and defines "Internet Meme" as: "(a) a group of digital items sharing common characteristics of content, form, and/or stance, which (b) were created with awareness of each other, and (c) were circulated, imitated, and/or transformed via the Internet by many users."
