This presentation will highlight the importance of community descriptions in identifying the critical qualitative information that supports the existing quantitative data. Finally, to help you organize your paper, use the Community Attributes Assignment Template Download Community Attributes Assignment Template. You must use the examples on this template for your quantitative data.
This assignment is divided into two parts. In Part 1, you will create a PDF using the data from SparkMap. In Part 2, you will write a paper based on your findings. You will utilize the data found from your Week 1 discussion and expand on it to create a more comprehensive understanding of your community. As noted in the discussion, your community must comprise at least one hospital/clinic, food provider (supermarket, grocery store, etc.), recreation park, and K–12 school district. If your community does not contain those items, then you need to expand out to include the nearest community where you seek those services or the whole county.
Part 1
In your paper,
- Create a SparkMap for your Community. Using SparkMap, create a PDF of your chosen community using 15% for "Population Below Poverty Level," and 15% for "Population Less than High School."

- When opened, you will note a map of the United States with various areas highlighted. This is a Vulnerable Populations Footprint map.
- On the right side of the screen, enter the name or ZIP code for your community ZIP CODE IS 21046
- Ensure that both Map and Label have a checkmark next to them.
- Adjust the Population Below Poverty slider to 15%.
- Keep Transparency at 0%.
- Select "–" in the upper right of the map to zoom out. Zoom out until the dashed lines representing the county line are visible. Refer to the following example.
- Example:
- Select "Export" in the upper right, which will open a pop-up window.
- Select "Map + Legend, Landscape (11 x 8.5 in)" from the drop-down menu.
- Enter your community's name as the Map Title.
- Export Layout should remain as Map + Legend, Landscape (11 x 8.5 in).
- For "Export File Format," select "PDF Document."
- Under "More Options," select "Keep current map scale and crop map to fit page."
- Once the previous steps are done, select "Export" in the pop-up window.
- Note: The conversion process can take a few minutes.
- When complete, a new pop-up window will appear.
- Select the link in the pop-up window to see your PDF.

- Submit the PDF to Waypoint along with your paper.
