Students must readthese two paperstogether ina waythat highlights the differentconclusionsthatthereadermightdraw.Studentsarerequiredto readthetwoarticles carefullyandformulateacriticalpositionontheissue.
The relationship between Islam and democracy in the contemporary world is complex. While Bernard Lewis sees the lack of freedom in Islam as the major obstacle to democratization, Esposito and Voll argue that Islamic tradition contains a number of key concepts that support democracy. Compare and contrast the arguments of these thinkers and critically analyze the most essential features of their debate.
NOTE: You may only agree with one author, OR disagree with both, OR agree with some components in each argument. It is important for you to carve your position clearly, succinctly and rationally; this means you need to provide reasons for your position vis-à-vis the two articles.
In your essay compare the following specifically;
1. What are the authors’ primary arguments?
2. How do they go about making their arguments?
3. What assumptions do they make?
4. What are the strength and weaknesses of their arguments?
5. What conclusions do they reach?
6. Have they made a compelling case or not?
7. What conclusions do I believe can be drawn from these articles?
8. Do I agree with them or not? If yes, why? If not, why not?
