The specific characteristics occur in a particular sequence and within a specific period. If conflicts occurring at any stage are not resolved properly, it leads to bad personality of the individual. The name of the phase is given according to the erogenous zone at that particular developmental stage. The commencement of oral phase starts right from the birth of the child up to 18 months. The infant is optimistic, naive, dependent on others for all needs and is not harmful to anyone. He finds pleasure in doing basic oral related activities like sucking, chewing food, and biting. If these habits are not managed properly, the child develops an oral obsession at later stage. The root cause of excessive alcoholism, smoking, eating disorders is oral fixation (McKenna p. 33). Around two years of age, child enters into the anal stage. The child learns toilet-related activities at this stage and finds pleasure in those activities. The child should be dealt carefully during bowel training. If the harsh training is employed to a child, he might develop anal retentive personality. Such training cultivates bad temper, destructive nature, and stingy personality. The child may become creative and productive, if bowel training is managed positively by praising the child (McKenna p. 34). The age range of the phallic phase is from three to six years. The child becomes aware of surrounding and knows the difference between male and female. The genital awareness develops in this phase. He finds happiness in manipulating the sex organs like masturbation activity. Male child develops Oedipus Complex i.e. subconsciously for the love the child wants to replace father and take the place of his mother. Female child develops Electra Complex i.e. subconsciously the child wants to take the place of his father. At the end of the stage, they identify with the same-sexed parent. Any misunderstanding at this stage leads to problems with sexual relationship in future.
