The Industrial Revolution (1750-1850) which started in England, also gave rise to the new economic system of capitalism and free markets, as espoused by the “invisible hand” of the great economist Adam Smith. Before, the prevailing economic system was agricultural in nature, which was feudalism and wealth was derived from land ownership as exemplified by the vast holdings of the royalty and members of aristocracy. Feudalism is limited in ways it can exploit natural resources but capitalism, as it also coincided with the height of colonialism at that time, allowed for maximization of resource extraction due to the profit motives of the new ruling class, the capitalists. This over-exploitation to the point of depletion and even environmental degradation has resulted in the so-called “tragedy of the commons” whereby a previously common free-access resource, like water (rivers, lakes, and seas), forest products, and minerals has led to environmental disasters like global warming (Nonini 165). One aspect of the documentary which greatly resonated with me was the struggle for the environment, which started with an apparently very simple act of planting a single tree but then expanded to include so many people it became a mass movement. The idea was to force the government to change its environmental policies, as it is only the people who can save the environment because politicians need to be forced to do so, as they are sometimes beholden to some vested foreign or global commercial interests.
