The need to evaluate the effectiveness of bullying prevention programs is very significant particularly in the field of social work. The outcome of such research is very crucial in formulating policies that will enhance effective anti bullying programs while non- effective programs are discarded. Bullying occur in different forms among children for instance cyber bullying is currently a major problem in the US. The complex nature of this form of bullying require newer strategies which can only be done upon evaluation of the present programs.
The while the research sought to evaluate one of the anti bullying programs, they also wanted to find out the attitude of the participants towards bullying. The hypotheses formulated by the research are for instance, effective anti-bullying programs reduce the frequency of observed bullying and modify the attitudes that encourage it. However, the effectiveness of these programs is unknown since less research has been done.
Literature review focused so much on the bullying behaviour. It reviewed literatures that explains that bullying occurs both as a reaction (to anger and frustration) and proactive reaction in the form of aggression. Other issues discussed include direct behaviours like, hitting, stealing and indirect ones like social isolation of victims. definition of bullying as the resultant behaviour due to the imbalance of power between the bully and the victim that prevents the victim from defending himself. The research also reviews the prevalence rates of bullying in the Europe and Australia that shows the prevalence rates as higher than fifteen percent o the student population. The percentage of students that are victims of bullying is about 75% of the surveyed population.
