In the beginning, for instance, we see Agamemnon and Achilles locked in a bitter dispute, enraging Achilles. There is that part where the anguish of Achilles came to overwhelm him, and was conflicted as to act out his anger and strike at Agamemnon in order to kill him. Athena, out of nowhere, and clearly looking in on the fight, swooped down from heaven and grabbed his hair. Here a god came down to counsel Achilles about what to do. In this case Athena made it her mission to to pacify Achilles and to be able to tame that passion that was seething within the hero. In this way the gods shaped and guided the emotions and the thoughts of characters, as one of the key roles that they played in Book 1. Instead of striking Agamemnon with his sword and causing widespread violence among the Greek forces, Athena advised Achilles to get back at Agamemnon with words instead. With words he could shame Agamemnon. The importance placed by Achilles on the advice of Athena reflects the respect and primacy that humans gave to these interventions of the gods in their most intimate thoughts and feelings, as well as with their most important dealings with other men. We see this in the way Achilles followed the advice of Athena: “Goddess, men should follow your instructions, though angry in their hearts. Its better so. The person whos obedient to the gods, the gods attend to all the more” (Homer, The Iliad Book 1, 205-242).
