Value-based Leadership Theory

In this module, we have been focusing on values-based leadership, where the leader sets a personal example, and this sets the tone for the organizational culture and acceptable behaviors. The formal healthcare leadership role has ethical challenges and responsibilities because a leader is empowered to direct the behaviors of the staff in the organization. This influence can have positive or negative effects on both the healthcare organization and the staff. The desire found in healthcare leaders, staff, and physicians is to make changes that improve the quality of their services and patient health.

There are three A's of values-based leadership: awareness, action, and achievement.

The Three A's of Values-based Leadership:

Awareness is the identification of your personal values.

Action turns your values into actions.

Achievement recognizes the synergistic effect of achieving more when working together as a team.

The Four Stages of Learning and Mastery:

Stage 1: The four stages of learning and mastery begins with unconscious incompetence in stage one. This can be difficult if the leader is unaware of their mistakes and can be a result of a lack of a good value system, resistance to feedback, or simply that they need to have substantive feedback.

Stage 2: 

Stage two is conscious incompetence where there is still a lack of a good value system, they understand the is a need for improvement, and the leader recognizes they need a mentor.

Stage 3: 

The third stage is conscious competence where the leader has adopted a good value system, understands their potential and the need to continue learning and practicing.

Stage 4:

Stage four is unconscious competence where the leader has a good value system and they are highly skilled.
