The Changing American Attitude
Considered as the epitome of cultural diversity, the American society is also an amalgamation of different thought processes and perspectives on different crucial social issues, and that is the reason why the nation is still considered an embodiment of diversity. Overcoming orthodoxy and rigid conventionalism, the people of the American society have strived to become more tolerant in their views and opinion, and that is the reason why the issue of same sex marriage has also come under consideration. The outlook of Americans is changing in respect of same sex marriage, and their outlook is also changing in regard to gender roles and orientations. The urge to pass same sex marriage laws and the urge to promote more participation of women in the armed force on the part of the American Government are indicators to the fact that Americans’ views about sexual and gender choices and orientations are changing. But despite of such changes, the opinion of people in the United States still vary widely in respect of the concerned issues.
If it can be argued that Americans are becoming more tolerant of different types of sexual orientations other than straight, then it must also be argued that there are myriad of Americans who are still rigid in their opinion against sexual orientations other than the straight one. Still today innumerable gay and lesbian kids and young adults are being bullied by their peers on the ground of different sexual orientation, and as a consequence of such bullying, myriad of victims are committing suicide (Burns, n.d.). Gay and lesbian youths are being subjected to undue criticisms, and religious institutions in the United States are adding to the effort of criticism. And all these are making the situation graver.
