Control charts are used as a way of charting statistics in order to observe abnormal variations or deviations. In general, an abnormal variation would be greater than + 3 standards deviations away from the mean. For example, let’s say a donut shop has a quality control employee who tracks the quality of conformance of samples of donuts that are produced by the shop. Each hour the employee takes a sample of donuts and observes them for the desired specifications (width, height, hole size, roundness) and tracks that information on a control chart. With this control chart, the quality control employee can tell if there is something abnormal about the manufacturing process. Maybe the donut holes are too big or too small and the machine needs to be recalibrated, maybe there is a new employee on the manufacturing line who hasn’t yet properly learned how to load the dough into the machine. These abnormalities will be able to be found and corrected with the control chart.
