Does anyone know what an excited state configuration is? Pls Help!
To begin, an excited state refers to the movement of between orbital shells when absorbing heat or other types of energy.
Neon when in a ground state has the following atomic configuration by Bohr's Model of an atom.
As an electron in the outer shell can move when absorbing photon energy (or becoming excited) it may do something like what can be seen in the below diagram.
When in an excited state, an electron from the outermost shell can move to another shell. In its ground state neon has the of
##1(s^2)2(s^2)3(p^6)##
The amount an electron will move is dependent on the amount of energy absorbed but an example of an excited state configuration is
##1(s^2)2(s^2)2(p^5)3(s^1)##
