Question:

Edward Said believed that  “Anyone who teaches, writes about, or researches the Orient…is an Orientalist, and what he or she does is Orientalism…Orientalism lives on through (its) doctrines and theses about the Orient and the Oriental.” (Pg. 2)

And…

“The relationship between the Occident (west) and the Orient is a relationship of power, of domination…”

Considering the art and architecture viewed in the assigned reading, and also that Islamic art can be considered to be a late 19th– 20th century construction -- can the West ever view Islamic art and culture without a lens of cultural hegemony?  Have you noticed a sense of “us” and “them” in conversations, books, and articles about art? Is Edward Said correct when he states that we will always practice Orientalism?

(Hegemony – leadership or dominance by one country over another)
