The definition of family shared in the video 2010's American Family Defined, compared to the definition of family in our course text are very different. Family today does not always have a husband and a wife. There are divorced parents today in families and parents that have the same gender. An American family today is very different from an American family back in the day. It is very normal today to have a diverse family. The show The Modern Family as discussed in the video is a great example of what a family make look like today. Today there are couples who are not married and do not have children and maybe do not have any interest in marriage or children that live together under the same roof, back in the day that was not very common to see and was not considered traditional. The historical notion of the traditional family included, "married partners and children residing in a household" (Wardle, F., & Fitzpatrick, T. 2016). The course text and the video are similar in a sense of there is no such thing as typical or normal anymore in our society. Family dynamics are constantly evolving and things that were not normal back in the day are not considered normal and are becoming respected.
Providing family-centered support to me is like a framework for parents on what it means to be a good parent and what a child needs. It is a great support for parents to know what it takes to be a good parent. Family-centered support is also great for teachers and what it takes to be a good and responsible teacher. Understanding the definition of family will allow me to be family centered when advocating for children and their families because I understand that family structures are all different and I will respect and that. I am aware that no matter the circumstance and dynamic that the parent and myself are partners and will work together for their child. Family-centered practice is a way of working with families, both formally and informally, across service systems to enhance their capacity to care for and protect their children (childwelfare.gov).
