Empirical Methods in Software Engineering Course

Exam 1 --- Incorporating Empiricism into Your Work

Objective: Add an empirical component to your work.

Assignment: You all must have an idea of an SE tool or technique that you think is promising (in terms of throughout, quality or any other factor) but lacks empirical evidence to back that. It would be good if it had an empirical component. The purpose of this exam is to allow you to think about how you would provide an empirical component to your tool or method or technique.

For example, if you are validating a peer-review technique, how would you design a study, or studies, to validate that technique?

You should use the information from the course about different types of empirical studies and their strengths and weaknesses to determine which study or studies will be the most appropriate for your topic.

An important part of this examination is the justification you provide for the chosen study design. Part of the study design should be hypotheses and research questions you are investigating.

In addition, you will need to specify the types of data that will be collected and justify why they are valid measurements for the particular variables of interest.

What to Submit : You should write a relatively short (MAXIMUM of 6 pages, single spaced 10 point times new roman) report to explain your choices. Your report should include at least the following sections:

1. Introduction and description of the technique/tool/method studied

2. Previous work that you have already completed and initial related work from the literature

3. Detailed description of the study design (include the type of study, a figure to show the design if possible including the independent and dependent variables, and the hypotheses and research questions studied) along with a justification

4. What data will be collected, how it will be collected, justification

5. Conclusion

Grading Your grade will be based on the completeness of your descriptions and justification. You will also be graded on the adequacy of the study design to the problem that it is supposed to address.

Due: Submit your report in Word or PDF format (Word preferred) (a Blackboard submission link will be made available) by June 28.
