In this assignment, you continue to explore the ethic of critique, in particular, its relationship to the ethic of the profession and educational leadership. As Poliner Shapiro and Stefkovich (2011, p. 13) noted, scholars associated with the ethic of critique:

…challenge the status quo by seeking an ethic that will deal with inconsistencies, formulate the hard questions, and debate and challenge the issues… [They] ask us to redefine and reframe other concepts such as privilege, power, culture, language, and even justice. 

Consider the above quote as you analyze the McIntosh (1990) article for this assignment. The McIntosh article explores the existence of privileges for the white population and the association of strength and power with privilege and serves as a complement to your Chapter Two reading in Poliner Shapiro and Stefkovich (2011). Therefore, be sure to read McIntosh’s (1990) seminal piece, “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” and connect it to the ethic of critique and Chapter Two of Poliner Shapiro and Stefkovich.   Next, construct your assignment to meet the content and written communication expectations below.  Content Expectations

·         Article Analysis: According to McIntosh (1990), “I did not see myself as a racist because I was taught to recognize racism only in individual acts of meanness by members of my group, never in invisible systems conferring unsought racial dominance on my group from birth,” (n.p.). Analyze the argument McIntosh made in the assigned article about systemic, unearned advantage and conferred dominance and justify the analysis with comprehensive evidence from the article.  

·         Argument Evaluation: Critique McIntosh’s (1990) article including why you agree or disagree with the main points you identified in your analysis.  

·         Ethical Leadership Application: Compare ways in which the McIntosh (1990) article relates to the ethic of the profession and the ethic of justice explored in Week One.

·         Personal Reflection: Examine how you might address issues of equality, diversity, and marginalized populations within your school site or agency, including how your personal feelings and prejudices may affect your leadership style and effectiveness.
