Final Paper for AAS 202 Course
8-10 page paper based on the proposal I have provided below. Must also use sources that I included in proposal. The topic is skin bleaching in the Caribbean, specifically Jamaica. Should have knowledge on Caribbean history and African American Studies.
Proposal:
I. For my final paper, I will be discussing the prevalence of skin bleaching in the Caribbean, specifically in Jamaica. My paper will start with a history of standards of beauty, colorism, and hierarchies of race in the Caribbean, during the colonial era. I will begin with I will include historical sources concerning whiteness as a standard of beauty and the hierarchies formed around this ideology. Then I will examine the affect this ideology had on dark skinned Caribbeans over time, and present statistics concerning skin bleaching in the contemporary Caribbean. I will also look at ideal images of beauty within the Caribbean and the social and cultural factors that contribute to the reinforcement of this standard today. I will also examine the motives of those who bleach and the role it has in modern Caribbean culture today.
