QUESTION

Genogram What is a genogram?

The Genogram has been used since the late 60's-70's as a genetic counseling tool by clinicians and in health education to assist in the awareness and the learning process. The goal of the genogram is to bring greater awareness of the materials presented in the course and in the book and to enhance your understanding of your health and behaviors and the potential ramifications of the choices you might or do make. And very importantly, the connectedness (or predispositions) through generations that exists between you and your blood relatives and non-blood relatives or other persons. When you read my list below, you will see that you can do it and that there are many examples to utilize.

Directions:

1. The idea is to list specific health and behavioral conditions that may or may not have a genetic base. These may include diabetes, cancer, hypertension or eating disorders. You may also list behaviors such as aggression, controlling issues and other lifestyle issues. Also, you may include healthy behaviors such as meditating, serving, biking, and dancing or laughing. Start asking questions and you will be able to finish!

2. You should complete a three generational genogram with the third being your generation (and you). Yes, you should include grandparents, parents and sisters/brothers. If you have children it is very interesting and a positive exercise to include them!:)

3. Three generations of blood relatives should be included, but you may need/want to include non-related persons. If you are adopted you need to include your adopted parents if you do not know or have access to your biological parents (if they hike/exercise or smoke, Both of these are strong indicators in your life).

4. The symbols used in the genogram are completely up to you. You need to list at least 5 items per person (I will give you a long list of examples, but you are not limited to my list!). List health and behavioral conditions. Use at least 15 different items total

as well answer:

 a. what tendencies did you pick up in your 'family history'     b. give one example of how you will change/modify or eliminate two 'negative traits.'     c. tell me what 'very interesting' item you learned?
