Strategic resources is considered to be a number of things within an organization such as strong leadership (personnel), financial resources, people that work together to make everything stay afloat and knowing how to do these things. Many health care organizations such as hospitals works together by sharing a lot of its resources. These recourses include nurses for nursing homes, equipment that is used to aid them in doing their job and other services that are provided to patients. Types of competencies can be communication and relationship management based. Competencies can also be beneficial skills such as knowing how to motivate and negotiate, quality improvement theories and having general management principles (Spath & Abraham, 2013). A licensed health care provider can help an organization attain a competitive advantage by providing outstanding service. When patients are taken care of properly and in a timely manner, their loyalty will remain with that organization and will stay there while also recommending the organization to others. Health care providers give an organization its reputation as being a trusted organization or one that not to many people are fond of. A lot of health care organization are in competition with each other and are always looking for ways to stay ahead of the competition.

Strategic resources provides an array of collaboration of different entities in an effort to meet a common goal. In healthcare this would include all medical staff, medical equipment companies, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, home health agencies, dialysis and any other medical related companies that provide health related services. In comparison, competencies is the ability to distinguish oneself through strategic capacity as a company and provide something that no one else offers therefor gaining an edge in the business. Authors Spath & Abraham highlights this point referring to the ability to address competencies can allow health service organizations an advantage in competitiveness. (Spath & Abraham 2013).
