Lecturer: Short Story Analysis Hills Like White Elephants is a short story by Ernest Miller Hemingway about a man and a girl who seem to be traveling with no known destination and at some point they are in a tense discussion. The two who are in a relation do not create an impression that they cannot agree on an issue about their future way of life and this ends to a heated discussion. The major theme in the story is abortion which they call “operation”. The topic that the couple is discussing is that the girl seems tired of the roaming and wants a settled life. This is because she is now expectant and the man wants her to have an abortion which he calls “operation” an idea she vehemently objects. It is evident from the man’s statement that the girl should have the operation only leaves one option to draw a conclusion from in this case it only alludes to abortion. The girl seems to have made up her mind that she was not for the idea of having an abortion and she now wants to settle and lead a more responsible life (Smith 127).

Rocking-Horse Winner is a short story by D.H Lawrence whose central theme is materialism and greed. This predominant theme is clearly shown by the young son, Paul who is wholly obsessed and his actions lead him to more greed and unfortunately this leads to his death. It’s ironical that Paul’s endeavors to please his family do not bring nor pride to the family. The irony in the story is that Paul gives while the mother takes. The motion of a rocking horse symbolically shows how Paul gives while the mother takes. The statement “There must be money” is repeatedly used to depict the level at which greed has affected the people (Poplawski and John 64).
