The great hype surrounding the Japanese diet is supported by no less an authority than the World Health Organization which reports that the average life expectancy of Japanese people {79 to 86 years} is not only superior to the Americans {75 to 80 years} but is much better than their more disease-prone counterparts when one considers that most of those Japanese life years {75 on average} are bereft of health or disability problems. The International Obesity Taskforce comes down heavily in favor of the Japanese, reporting that the Japanese people have the lowest obesity rate {3%} among developed countries as compared to others like France {11%} and the U.S {32%}

The Japanese diet retains its advantages of beauty, taste and health benefits while remaining much healthier and more conducive to longevity as compared Western diet. Perhaps the most powerful argument in preference of Japanese diet over the Western one is the common tongue-in-cheek declaration that it is not the diet but the Japanese genes that should be praised for this state of affairs. This perception is refuted by Japanese author and diet specialist Naomi Moriyama who declares: “You might think it’s all in our genes, but when Japanese people adopt a Western-style diet, they put on weight quickly”.
