Cultural criticism, feminist criticism, new historicism, post structuralism, and postmodernism are just a few of the magnifying lenses that have held up to the play. As a result of the ability of Fences to speak across cultural boundaries of race, age, and gender, it attracted the attention of scholarly inquiries. The upshot is that as a growing body of scholarship generated about Fences increased, the play has been canonized as a classic.
The story follows a 53-year-old one-time baseball player, now garbage collector, Troy Maxon – a bitter man crushed by a lifetime of disappointments. Throughout the play, “fences” are treated both literally and symbolically. The title itself serves as a key to the intention of the playwright. In the drama, Wilson sought to create a man desperately trying to fence his dignity, his pride and his family and fence out the humiliation of white America. Furthermore, the concept explored the relationships between his characters as defined not by their simple humanity, but by their sociological concept, particularly the differences that exist between the American male-female relationships.
For instance, we have the deteriorating relationship between Troy and his son, not because the two are essentially incompatible, but because Troy fears that his son will suffer the same disappointments and indignities that he had.
