Zylex Case Analysis

The real-time operating system and the graphical user interface used by the company were based on software developed in-house. But this software had structural limitations that prevented incorporation of more facilities and capabilities that were essential to satisfy consumers in a highly competitive market. Though the company tried its best to introduce as many features as possible through continuous improvement programs, getting developers having the requisite skill in such outdated software also became a big problem. The top management thus decided to shift to modern software technologies and hired a new software engineering director and contracted NeXT Corporation to supply major portions of the new software. A new product line, Symphony, based on this new software was also planned. Within three years the new software was launched with much fanfare and was dubbed as a quantum leap in etching technology. However, it had very low reliability and performed rather poorly as a real-time operating system and also fared very badly when compared with the earlier product which, though built on an outdated platform, had reached a fairly high degree of reliability and had enough features that were incorporated through years of continuous improvement programs. The customers clamored for higher reliability and extended features in the new software but it became very difficult for the software engineering department to provide these facilities as NeXT Corporation also became less than enthusiastic as they were planning to shift to other product lines.
