The state legislature has agreed to go forth with your ideas that you formulated in the Week 4 Key Assignment. You will now have to explain how the new implementation of your juvenile justice system will have a positive effect on society.

The first two juveniles to enter your system are Josh, a 16-year-old male, and Terry, a 15-year-old male.

Josh comes from a one-parent home. He was found in his neighbor’s apartment stealing cash from her purse. His prior record consists of truancy, malicious mischief, running away from home, assault with a weapon, possession of drugs (under one gram), and grand theft auto.

Terry comes from a one-parent home and has been truant from school, has been breaking curfew, is considered incorrigible, and has run away from home three times.

What would be the options for these two young men under your new juvenile justice system? Explain in detail their punishments, their supervision, and the expected outcomes.

Assignment Guidelines

  • First, revise your Week 4 Key Assignment based on instructor feedback and peer responses.
  • Next, add to your final Key Assignment draft by addressing the following questions regarding the above scenario:
    • Courts
      • You now have two courts; one for status offenders and one for juvenile delinquents.
        • What will be the criteria for placing a juvenile into one of these courts?
        • Who will handle the supervision of the status offenders?
    • Status offenders
      • Will this go on a juvenile record?
      • Who will hold the power over a status offender if he or she does not complete the required punishment?
      • Will parents have any input in this?
    • Juvenile probation
      • What programs will be offered?
      • How will they be funded?
    • Detention
      • Will you have to close some facilities? Will you have employment layoffs? Why or why not?
      • Will detention sentences be determinate (3 years) or be nondeterminate (3–5 years)?
    • Waiving to adult court
      • Will the age to waive be lowered or made higher?
    • Military
      • What are the options for placing a juvenile in the military?
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style. ADD this to the 5 IP Medicated Child

Please take a look at this resource and discussion on medicating children and its impact on the juvenile justice system. This resource is to be included in your resources for this unit 5 IP assignment.

In the live chat we will examine the text's discussion on sex offenders p. 345, and prosecution p. 437 as it relates to many other theories and policies both familiar and controversial. This resource examines an Eastern as opposed to Western approach to living. What if our juveniles had this capacity? Should our culture consider adding the philosophies of meditation and mindfulness to our juvenile programs?
