Causes of Low Employee Morale Employee morale has been identified to be an important catalyst for enhancing productivity and business growth (Barak, 2001). However, it is not always that employee morale is promted at the workplace and among employee. The situation of absence of morale among employees and at the workplace has been researched into by various labor experts. Among factors that labour experts point to as the causes of low employee morale has been discussed below.

Firstly, Varjan (2010) points to misemployed people as one of the causes of low employee morale. By misemployed people, reference is being made to people who are at the right job placements with the wrong experience or qualification. Indeed to be motivated and have one’s morale boosted to work, the fellow much have a greater degree of easiness and flee with the work that the fellow undertakes at the work place. However, most people: out of the frustration of getting the kind of job that meets their qualification and intellectual knowhow settle with any job at all that they find themselves in. in such situations, such misemployed people really find it difficult to settle with the organisational culture of their newly found jobs (Maciosek, 1994). The healthcare and caregiving sectors are very vital and volatile sectors that requires specific technical and professional knowhow. It is for this reason that people who are misemployed at The Department of Veteran Affairs will continue to find it extremely difficult to rise their morale at the workplace (Gillian et al., 1997).

Secondly, Drew (2011) points out that absence of leadership example is another factor that causes low employee morale. Leaders are the steering wheel of the organisational culture. This means that the rhythm of the organisation is determined by the kind of leadership style and leadership attitude that exists at the work. Employee morale has also been found to be one of the most sensitive components of organisational culture. To this effect, if leadership of The Department of Veteran Affairs lack the professional and ethical knowhow to empower their workers, it is much likely that the workers will not have their morale boosted. Again, leaders must do everything possible to show that they are well motivated and their moral boosted. If leaders show low morale at the workplace and absence of motivation towards the work they do, it is much likely that the surbodinates are also going to show apathy towards the work they do. Leaders of The Department of Veteran Affairs are therefore urged live exemplary examples of high morale for their workers to imitate. Some of the ways by which leaders can show high morale would be to show commitment at work, working extra hours, reporting to work on time and showing content with their earnings.

Finally, Varjan (2010) mentions “Overall Lack Of Personal And Professional Growth In The Firm” as another cause of low employee morale. Organisations are supposed to equip employees with personal and professional growth. Such peronal and professional growths are what help employees to take up high positions and progress in rank. It is the wish of every employee therefore that through organisational programs such as in-service training, sponsored courses, seminars and workshops, they will have the avenue to upgrade themselves. Once such opportunities of personal and professional growths are absent, workers morale go down. Koduah (2001) argues that the absence of personal and professional growth means the absence of promotions and increased rewards. Such absence of rewards also means absence of motivation and then absence of motivation means reduced or low morale. To curtail the problem, organisational heads of The Department of Veteran Affairs should ensure that they put structures in place to promote the personal and professional growth of workers Foy and Stransky, 2009).
