Children in the first grade level are expected to become beginning readers when they are supported by the appropriate reading methodologies (Johnson, 1999).

This program aims to help children ages 7 to 8 to learn to love reading and develop different aspects of their reading abilities. The main feature of this program consists of a daily “reading aloud” session with various partners. Th

e reading partners can include a classroom friend, a classmate who is a good verbal reader, an older student from the same school, an older sibling, a parent, a guardian, older relatives, and the like. This reading partnership will be organized in such a way that there is an opportunity for the child to hear from and get taught by good models. The highlight of this reading program is to allow each child to do an oral reading to the whole class as he develops his or her self-confidence.

For this reading activity, 10-15 minutes is allotted daily. It should be a relaxing time for both student and partner to discover different stories, explore them, and interact with each other about what they have just read. Meanwhile, flexibility is also allowed by giving a 5-minute extension to minimize learning interruptions.

For the purposes of this literacy program, the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT), tenth edition is going to be used as a pre-test and post test tool. The SAT is a valid and reliable test material when it comes to measuring student achievement (Pearson Education, Inc., 2009). The Reading subtests in particular assess a child’s phonemic awareness, decoding, phonics, vocabulary and comprehension. This latest edition features an Expanded Testing of Early Literacy with new sets of questions meant to evaluate the basic reading skills of children.
