Part four of the Discourse goes over a short summary of the initial three meditations by Descartes. Initially Descartes embarks on the belief that considers untrue all the things that he can consider doubtful. Hence demolishing everything that can fall under the Aristotelian philosophy, which is formed on the solid foundation of sensory experience and demonstrative logic. What he is basically doing here is to avoid prior philosophical prejudices and embark on his journey with something fresh. It is the accumulation of his thought process that he summarizes the direction he takes as ‘I am thinking, therefore I exist’. He cannot doubt this knowledge which makes it easy for him to vouch for this fact. So the direction of his thoughts is built on ‘clear and distinct perception’. headed in a direction towards things that are purely impossible to doubt. This is when I was sure that the ending would be very different from the way that the reading had begun. And I was correct in the way the surprise ending was Descartes ends up confirming that God formulates the truth of apparent and distinct perceptions. 2) Since you were expecting a different ending, evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was not clearly suggested at the beginning. Well while I appreciate the interesting conclusion that the reading takes there are certain points that lead me to think that the evidence and argument that Descartes has put up to validate God are neither original nor very satisfying. His proofs of God are highly reliant on medieval scholastic tradition when you compare them to his radical ideas regarding the character of the mind and certainty. For example his initial claim that the idea of God rooted from the notion of perfection, must be a result something as perfect as the notion itself. However this evidence relies so heavily on the controversial idea of causation that it gives one to not be completely convinced of the robust argument that Descartes is trying to establish.
