Social pressure discouraged those women who wanted to do at least something different from others. All media which were run by men promoted traditional gender roles which forced women to accept the idea of being a housewife as bliss.

The publication of The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan was a sensation. The book offered a new point of view at female life in the USA. It represented housework as something irrelevant and oppressive. The book was greatly appreciated as well as its writer. Betty Friedan became the leader of the women liberation movement. She organized meetings where women shared their experiences of family life or failure to build a career. Those meetings were important for women because they did not feel alone anymore. Friedan’s active position, however, had some inconsistencies. Women of color and lesbians were isolated from women liberation movement led by her. She made a great breakthrough, but her efforts to cope with the expanded audience of female liberation movement failed. Friedan treated abortion as a right of choice of every woman. She promoted equal opportunities for all women.

Another famous personality of the movement was represented by Robin Morgan. She was an anti-war activist. However, she was quick to join the female liberation movement. Her views were radical. She was famous in the circle of feminist activists because of the protest against Miss America. Women gathered not far from the place where the event was conducted and made a show. They had a liberation can where they threw away oppressive things such as bras, magazines and various utensils. Her activism contributed to the radical wing of a female liberation movement. Since that protest, women were more active in their public expression. They sought the opportunity to influence the media which were stereotypical.
