Hi ,

This is a post from a student at my class , I need to have a comment and a question

The Voting Rights Act was established to "enforce" the 15th Amendment because of the discriminatory voting practices that were occurring in many Southern states against African Americans.

The government determined that the existing 15th Amendment laws were not sufficient enough to overcome the resistance by the state.  Each discriminatory case was handled on a case-by-case basis and if one claim was deemed unjust, another issue would arise.  Because the 15th Amendment didn't include specific verbiage about the state requiring tests and the "grandfathered" pre-15th Amendment requirements (so only white men could still vote without taking the tests and paying the taxes/fees), it still excluded many black men.  The Voting Rights Act, included the verbiage that was needed in order to ensure African American men could vote regardless and not have to take a test to allow it.

Martin Luther King promoted non-violence because of his Christian faith and his following of Gandhi.  He believed that African Americans did not need to use violence in order to achieve freedom.  He believed that by using words during protest he would make a difference in gaining back all of the freedoms that were denied.  He was quoted in saying "I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant."

His policy of non-violence was effective because it allowed people to trust him and in turn they elected him as the president of the SCLC which enabled him to gather evidence of the poor practices that were being used against African American's from voting....he used this information to protest which eventually lead to the enforcement through the Voting Rights Act.
