POST 1:

This 1606 map shows how the two English land grants dominated the central part of the coast. The area to the north was claimed by France and the area to the south by Spain.

In preparation for this discussion re-watch Segment 7 of the film After the Mayflower- We shall remain.

By the 1620s, the French, the Dutch, the English, and the Spanish all had settlements in North America. For your initial post, discuss how the English people who settled in the Massachusetts Bay area were different from these other settlers. Consider their intellectual, spiritual, economic, and social ideals. Use specific examples from your readings.

Then discuss with two of your classmates the ways in which you think these factors influenced the settlers’ relations with the native peoples. Use specific examples to support your ideas.

POST 2:

Popular history has imbued King James and John Smith with larger than life status for their roles establishing a wilderness settlement in Virginia. In this discussion, we will look more critically at one of them.

In preparation for this discussion watch the film Secrets of Jamestown.

Discuss some of the difficulties encountered by the early Jamestown colony and how they could have been avoided. How much of the difficulty was lack of preparation and how much was unfortunate, unforeseen circumstances?

Even in his own time, John Smith was a controversial figure. Next, discuss with two of your classmates whether or not you think he was the right man for the job. Would you have hired him? Use specific examples from your readings and the film to support your position.
