QUESTION

How do you convert grams to kilograms?

See the explanation.

The equality between grams and kilograms is ##"1000 g=1 kg"##. This gives two equivalent fractions, also called conversion factors. They are ##"1000 g"/"1 kg"## and ##"1 kg"/"1000 g"=1"##. Equivalent fractions or conversion factors always equal ##1##. When converting grams to kilograms, you would use the second conversion factor. This will cancel grams and leave you with kilograms.

Examples

1) Convert ##"692 g"## to kilograms.

##692 cancel"g"xx(1 "kg")/(1000 cancel"g")="0.692 kg"##

2) Convert ##"58 g"## to kilograms.

##58 cancelcancel"g"xx(1 "kg")/(1000 cancel"g")="0.58 kg"##
