Part 1: Researching Indian Health Service (HIS)

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 14 of Addressing Health Disparities: Cultural Proficiency in Introduction to Health Care Management. This will provide a broad overview of a health care manager’s role in improving cultural proficiency and the important role that administrators can serve in creating a positive change.

You will also review Chapter 4: Law, Government, and Public Health in Public Health: What It Is and How It Works. One of the U.S. Public Health Agencies discussed in this chapter is the Indian Health Service (IHS), which is federally responsible for providing health services to American Indians and Alaskan Natives. This agency has been severely underfunded, consistently overlooked, and publicly ridiculed, which has led to the further marginalization of Native Americans in the United States.

Part 2: Representing your best work in your ePortfolio

Think about the impression that you want your ePortfolio to communicate to those who view it. In other words, what do you want a colleague or a prospective employer to know about you and your work if they view this particular assignment?

Upload the assignment to your ePortfolio, by following the given steps:

Access your Folio account (available in the online classroom).

Click on your name.

Once you are on your main profile screen, you will find three tabs (About, Portfolio, and Connections). Click on ‘Portfolio.’

You will find a gray box saying ‘+ Add new work.’ Click on that box, and a white window will appear.

The white box has ‘Add Work to Portfolio’ across the top and the option to ‘Start With A File’ or ‘Start With A Link.’ Click the ‘Start With A File’ tab and click the blue button that says ‘Browse Your Files.’ A new window will then open.

In the upper right of the new window, make sure ‘My Computer’ is highlighted, and click the blue button that says ‘Choose File.’

Find where your assignment is on your computer, highlight the file, and click the ‘Open’ button on the bottom right. Once clicked, you will find the upload progress.

Click to ‘Add a Title’ and create a descriptive title for this assignment.

Click to ‘Add a Description’ and

Briefly describe the work you uploaded to your ePortfolio.

Describe the skills or competencies you demonstrate in this assignment and connect them to the PLOs.

Click the ‘Choose a category’ tab and highlight ‘Education.’

Once you have a title, a description, and a category, click the blue button ‘Continue,’ which will open a new window.

In the new window, click ‘Details & Attachments’ at the bottom of the screen and ‘Tag’ your work.

Add appropriate tags in Folio, such as skills, subject areas, etc. Include the CLOs that are connected to this assignment.

In the new window, click ‘Save’ in the upper right for the drop-down menu. From there, click ‘Save & Return To Profile.’

You are done with the upload! Fortunately, the process becomes much easier and faster as you upload more. If you have any trouble, please email your instructor.

Part 3: Submit your work for grading

Once you have returned to your profile page and highlighted the ‘Portfolio’ tab,

Click on the link that says ‘EXPORT TO PDF’ on the right side of the screen.

Write in your Objective section, “MPH 621 ePortfolio Assignment Indian Health Service Week 2,” and click the paper you just uploaded to highlight it in blue.

Now click the blue button that says ‘Generate PDF’ and choose a save location on your computer.

Once saved, upload both your Word file and Folio PDF to Waypoint for grading.
