Borderline personality disorder can be narrated by describing the personality of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales. This was elaborated in the biography of Diana by biographer and journalist Sally Bedell Smith. Borderline personality is most commonly seen in women. These women are unstable in their self-image, moods, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. They also are angrier, more impulsive, and more confused about their identity. The condition is most commonly manifested in those who are abused or neglected in childhood. Diana suffered from early parental loss. Her mother departed and there was emotional withdrawal of her father for several years following the Spencer divorce. This had a traumatic effect on her and she suffered for a long time with issues of abandonment, anxiety, and insecurity. Smith mentions that Diana often wept before and after public engagements due to both her own high expectations for herself and the publics expectations of her. She also comments that Diana had mood swings, bulimia, self-mutilation, lying, and inattention. Diana also needed constant expressions of love and reassurance (Smith, 2000).
