His father, Frederico Gonzales emigrated from Chihuahua, Mexico when he was still younger during the Mexican Revolution in 1910. Rodolfo’s mother, Indonesia Gonzales, died when he was only an infant, at two years old.&nbsp.

The setting of his youth was in the harsh barrio on the east side of Denver. He grew up during the Great Depression, which was causing unemployment for many, and deportation for some. However, according to Gonzales, “ though the Depression was devastating to so many, we, as children, were so poor that it was hardly noticed".

His father told them the stories of the Mexican War of Independence, the long and hard struggle and effort of the Mexicans to gain their liberation and freedom against the dominion of Spanish colonial control. He was known to have a fierce, ardent and intense attitude since his youth.

Gonzales experienced a hard time paying for his education. Rodolfo worked at a part-time job in the beet fields while at the same time studying high school in Colorado and in New Mexico. He was able to save up enough money to be able to finish and graduate high school.

However, it was not the same story when it came to college. His financial situation did not allow him to be able to continue and finish his college degree. He was able to study for only one semester at the school of engineering at the University of Denver.

Due to his financial status, he diverted and pursued sports instead of a college education. He started his career as a boxer, first as an amateur and then as a professional. He was very successful at it, winning several titles and earning him fame and reputation nationwide.&nbsp.
