I need help understanding, what the significance of the relationship between religion, popular culture, and body modification?

I realize that a lot of people get crosses, angel wings, and scripture tattooed on them and are religious imagery, in addition to tattoos themselves being a part of popular culture. Other than tattoos though, I can't connect the relationship between any religious body modifications and popular culture. I don't know really know anything about any other ways people modify their bodies with a religious purpose and is also a part of popular culture. If you know of any other ways besides tattoos being in literal shapes of religious symbols or stating something religious like Biblical scripture, please share the knowledge with me.

Any knowledge or information you have, regarding body modification especially, is extremely helpful and appreciated! I can look into things further myself, I just want to gather as much information as I can to meet a word count requirement.

The class that inspired this question is called, Religion and Popular Culture and the specific topic of the unit is Art and Fashion.
