I need this forum post answered using the Group A response which is an individual opposed to Imperialism. It needs references and needs to be able to be submitted.
You will be divided into four groups for this forum by message. Fact: Over the past few decades, the nation has seen imperialism in many corners of the world. Great Britain has now become a super-power...owning ¼ of the globe and has become extremely rich doing it. "The sun never sets on the British Empire!" They own Canada, India, Australia, Hong Kong and the list goes on and on. Queen Victoria is very pleased. On the other hand, France and Germany are now in the "great game". They hold colonies in Africa and the Far East. The United States, on the other hand, has constantly looked "inward" from the end of the Civil War to the turn of the 20th Century...dealing almost exclusively with the "Indian Problem". Our nation's military is micro-sized compared to Germany, France, and Great Britain....and now the stirrings of imperialism is starting to take hold in the U.S.
Group A will assume the role of an individual seriously opposed to Imperialism (you hate the idea of us being involved with the Pacific at any time). You had a serious problem with annexing Hawaii (a kingdom), Alaska (sold to us by Russia), and any of the holdings based on the Spanish-American War...such as Guam and Puerto Rico. It's simply none of our business what goes on beyond our shores. You realize that holding gained by imperialistic moves will be costly in lives and money.
You in Group B will argue that we should not be involved in the Pacific, but it's acceptable to annex any holdings based on the Spanish-American War...such as Puerto Rico and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. You have been in support of the defense of the nation during the Spanish-American War but holding territory in the Pacific...such as the Philippines is beyond the scope of God-given Manifest Destiny.
In Group C, you think imperialism is fine...to a point. As a result of the Spanish-American War, the nation is considering annexing Puerto Rico, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines. You have no problem with this as long as it does not cost a lot of money and those holdings can have independence very soon.
In Group D, you see imperialism as a great opportunity to expand on the concept of God-given Manifest Destiny. It is America's mission to compete with Britain, France, China, and Germany on the global stage. You think that all property gained in the past 40 years is wonderful and could be very profitable. You are now starting to look elsewhere for American colonies...such as northern Mexico, portions of South America, and the Far East.
In response to Kipling's poem, each of you should post a statement in support, or in opposition to the idea of Imperialism (see the group you are in above). You do not need to restrict yourself to the moral justification. The arguments for, and against, expansion took many avenues. Your submission should be a minimum of certain words in length. Try not to make assumptions. Instead, assume the historical role of someone who lived in the United States near the turn of the century. You could be a manufacturer, a pastor, or a politician. You can be a millionaire (made by steel or railroads or oil), laborer, a die-hard pacifist, or a housewife. Be creative. BECOME that person...do NOT think 21st Century...but, at the turn on the 20th Century.
After your initial submission, you are then required to continue the debate by responding to three of your classmates. Your responses should be a minimum of certain, and should contribute to the dialogue. Your initial response is due by 11:55pm, ET, Friday and your responses to 3 other students by 11:55pm, ET, Sunday. The three classmate responses need to be with like-minded people (it means you need to read EVERYONE's initial input). The following week, you personally will be taking on someone who feels the opposite of you. It's going to be ROUGH. Good luck.
