This paper will analyze the above mentioned issue based on the reading of the Pastoral Epistles.

The first verse which should be stated is found in the Epistle to Philemon when Paul the Apostle acknowledges his power over other people in the young Church, but is no willing to exercise it in a direct way: “But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary”. (Philemon 1:14). This means that the leadership model which is criticized by the Christian Church is authoritative one and the above mentioned saint does not want his fellow believer to follow this path1. In other words, he promotes the spirit of voluntary obeying to the Church elders and considers it as an effective way to organize the Church environment.

Another verse which is able to shed light on the way organizational leadership was performed is found in the First Epistle to Timothy: “Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task” (1 Timothy 3:1) Then the saint talks about qualifications for the people who are willing to become overseers or deacons. It must be noted that all the qualifications which were articulated can be found in a noble man which means that the standard for leaders in the Church corresponds with the conventional ethics which is promoted in the society. As a result, the early Church does not set specific requirements, but simply urges people to live a moral life in order to become active participants in it2.
