Factors increasing a child’s vulnerability to abuse

Vulnerability to a child’s abuse whether physical or emotional depends with the age of the child with fatal cases being witnessed on young infants between the ages of 18-28 years. Young children between the ages of 6-11 years are also at high risks of non-fatal physical abuse with ages varying from country to country. however, Sexual abuse is reportedly high as at the onset of adolescent . The sex of the child also dictates the extent of vulnerability to child abuse with girls reporting high risk than boys of experiencing sexual abuse, education, nutritional neglect and forced prostitution . Special characteristics like premature infants and handicaps are at high risk of facing child abuse than the normal children. This is because such children are always seen by parents to be a burden and are thus abused due to such negative attitude. The size of the family is also proven by research to increases the likelihood of an infant receiving abuse. Big families with more than four children are three time more likely to experience child abuse than families with two or less children . The status of the family also dictates the possibility of a child experiencing abuse with young, single, less educated and poor parents stand high chances of abusing their children.

Physical health outcomes in abused children

Scientific research shows that the origins of adult disease are often found during the development of a child due to biological disruptions which takes place . This is because when cells are disturbed, their normal functioning is also disturbed and this makes them wear out faster than expected.
