The fallout from not having a consistent structure can result in losing out on talented employees and gaining and retaining stockholder value. Instead a consistency of both measures should be used. By surveying the market and benchmarking jobs, companies are assuring that they are competing at an advantage. Fine and Genkate 2009, define benchmarking as “examples from jobs that have been rated at various levels” (p. 5). These steps are the most critical in the compensation process . Having both measures in place gives an added advantage of ensuring that job structures “fit the imperatives of competitive advantage” (Martocchio, 2011, p. 151) for the company.
