Assignment, PHY 101
1. A body, A of mass 1.5 kg travelling along the positive x-axis with speed 4.5m/s collides with another body, B, of mass 3.2 Kg which is initially at rest. As a result of the collision. A is deflected and moves with a velocity of 2.1 m/s in a direction which is 30 degee below the positive x- axis. B is set motion at an angle, theta above the positive x-axis. Calculate the velocity of B after the collision
2. A 2 kg object moving at 4 m/s collides with a 3 kg object moving at 1.5 m/s in the opposite direction. Find their final velocities if (a) collision is perfectly elastic (b) the coefficient of restitution= 3/4 (c) the two objects stick together after collision
3. A firework of mass 1 kg explodes into two fragments. One fragment of mass 0.4 kg moves at 10 m/s. Find the velocity of the other fragment.
4. Two bodies of mass 2.0 kg each collide. The velocities before collision are U1 = 15i + 30j, U2 = -10i + 5j and V1 = -5i + 20j after collision. All speeds are given in m/s. Calculate the final velocity V2. Hint: Use the principle of conservation of linear momentum. Your V2 will be in the form ai+ bj, then you will find the magnitude using √(a^2 + b^2)
5. (I) A 2 kg object is projected vertically from the ground to a height of 5 m with a velocity of 5 m/s. Find its velocity at the height . (II) Show whether or not the the force that propels the object is conservative .
