Instructions

For this assignment, watch The Neighborhood S6E4: Welcome to the Name Drop. Please note this episode contains minor profanity.

As you watch, use the following prompts to guide your observations:

  1. Identify and describe the different types of nonverbals (proxemics, haptics, chronemics, kinesics, vocalics, oculesics, facial expressions, physical appearance) as explained in your textbook (cite your chapter). Provide examples (if present) of each form of nonverbal code found within the show.
  2. Nonverbal communication plays a major role in how we communicate. Often, we share multiple codes simultaneously. Explain the Theory of Nonverbal Coding Systems. Then provide two examples of scenes that possessed a cluster of nonverbal codes. Utilizing nonverbal terminology, clearly articulate the scene and provide the character you are referring to and which nonverbal codes made up the cluster observed.
  3. Nonverbal communication often enhances verbal messages; however, sometimes nonverbal behavior can contradict a verbal message and/or lead to misunderstandings. Identify and discuss one example in the episode that demonstrates either a contradiction or a misunderstanding of nonverbal messaging. Utilize nonverbal terminology, clearly articulate the scene, nonverbal codes and/or other concepts illustrating the nonverbal contradiction or misunderstanding.

After watching the episode and making your observations, record your answers to the questions above in a paper analyzing, evaluating, interpreting, and applying the diverse forms of human communication you observed.

In your submission, you must include APA citations for the textbook and the episode you watched.

You may reference Chapter 4 as you answer Prompt 1.
