Discussion One Week One Part Three PHI 208     In the excerpt from the Republic the example of the ring of Gyges is used to claim that humans only act morally because of fear that they will be caught. Present an example of someone being morally good out of an inherent desire to act in a specific way. Discuss with other the idea that morality is inherent and based on universal principles or virtues verses the idea that ethics is socially created and varied based on human social and political context. Which do you find to be more convincing. Which philosophical reason would you present for thinking that your positions is the best position.     When you think about moral relativism and it is scaring you I think about religions. Religions can be scary because it so many part in the bible that tell you what can happen to you if you don’t live by the laws are rules of the bible. I have stated before that my grandma raised me, she was very religions. I can remember that when every she had a problem she   would go to her bible and read then pray. She always said to me everything comes through Christ Jesus. I remember that when something would happen bad to someone she would say that they did not listen to God. That scare me until today, that if I do something wrong that something bad will come to me. I have a friend she steals, she tried to get to do it but I was scared, because I thought that I would get caught and go to jail. It was the fear of going to jail, that made me not do, plus also I know that it wrong to steal. I told her one day you get caught and end up in jail and she did. “Gyges’ Ging” by Plato they talk about the justice and the injustice. We know that it wrong to steal but some of would try it if we knew we could get away it. I am going to us this example to show you what I am talking about. I was working at my job, one of my co-worker was doing the cash register. I saw her take some money. I knew she was having a challenging time with bill and with three kids she is the only person working. I am dealing with what do tell are not tell I did not want her to lose her job. Should I tell I are should I just leave it along. I thought about what my grandmother would do as a Christian woman. I went to her and told her I saw what you done, put it back I want to tell this time, but if I catch you doing it again I will tell. In my heart, I knew what she done was wrong but I thought about her and the kids and gave her warning. Is this justice or injustice it a little of both to me. So, when is right to do justice or injustice. The best we to say it for me that we have good and bad they both exist. People say there is a God and Some say it not. I don’t know because I am never seeming him are it, some say it just a spirit. I guess we will just have to way and see when the end of the world comes.       Plato. What are some relativistic beliefs that you have or that you find in society? What are those ethical beliefs and how do people justify those beliefs?  I have always had very strong ethical beliefs! I know that everyone was raised differently and brought up with different morals and beliefs.  I was raised in a Christian household and we went to church every Wednesday evening for prayer meeting, when I was old enough we went to youth group every Friday and even though we had fun and played games we still studied the bible and worshipped, and then every Sunday it was Sunday school and then worship and Sunday evening another worship service.  I was also brought up in a family always had big family holiday dinners together and got together several times a month for family events.  I try to teach my children the importance of family and having a close knit one.  But, in turn my husbands family was never like that and it is unusual to him when we have big dinners or birthday celebrations! Even though my family is not as close as we used to be since some of the older family is gone.   I think that we justify our beliefs by practicing what we are taught and or raised to believe.  We have to realize thought that not everyone is raised the same for possibly religious beliefs or lack of them also! I have always had very strong ethical beliefs! I was brought up to believe that to always treat everyone fairly! My family has always had very strong beliefs.  Do not discriminate against anyone because of their race, sexuality, gender, religion, or beliefs!
