According to our text, "Aristotle demands that the righteous individual will have the perfect measure of strength and will go for what he calls the brilliant mean between having too little and having a lot of a given trademark." (Mosser, 2013, para. 35). To be a virtuous soldier, it intends to have honesty, follow service before self, and give excellence in all that you do. Respectability is appeared through mettle, trustworthiness, obligation, and responsibility.

A soldier will confront some upsetting events amid war. According to Robinson, “The military needs soldiers who will resist peer pressure to misbehave and who will do what is right not only when the gaze of others is upon them, but also when it is not.” (2007, p. 262).  Being a soldier means making a move when the circumstance calls for it. On the off chance that it implies relinquishing everything for more note Worthy's benefit, then they will do it realizing that their life is an ultimate sacrifice.

A soldier must keep their eyes and ears open continually. Rockets and rockets can strike any place and at whatever time. Envision you just woke up having to use the restroom. You need to get clothes in full uniform so that you can leave your bunk or trailer. After using the bathroom, you are strolling back to your bunk. At that point, you hear shrieking sounds and a missile bomb alarm goes off. You see it aiming towards your bunk. You begin running back to your bunk; your bunkmate was snoozing when you cleared out.

The missile is focused on straight for your bunk. You make it to the entryway and open it. Your bunkmate is hopping out of bed onto the floor protecting their head. You snatch them and rapidly push them out of the entryway. The bomb blasts anticipating what used to be your bunk into all headings inside of a twenty-foot sweep. Soldiers that experience rocket assaults have bounced on top of or pushed friends far from blasts. These acts display the virtues of integrity and courage, as well as service before self, and excellence in all we do.

D-2 6. Find examples from literature or media sources, or from current or past history, that demonstrate both success and failure at demonstrating a virtue.  In each case, what is the virtue that was demonstrated / lacking?  How did their actions display or fail to display that virtue, and in the case of the failure, what would the virtuous person have done instead?  Be sure to share the links with your classmates so they can read the full articles or watch the videos.  Don’t use examples that others have used before you.  First come, first served

An example from today's media and recent history of a success and failure in demonstrating a virtue is the riot in Charlottesville Virginia.  Our president in failing to lead at a critical point in our country when racial tensions are high. He failed to empathize with the people being victimized or barely recognize the many people that was injured and the one killed during a counter protest of a racial issue.  He put all the people, counter protesters and the protesters alike on the same moral plane which shows him to have either racial bios views or just plain ignorance.

The success at demonstrating a virtue is the counter protesters who had the courage to stand up for America's values even knowing that violence may be a result.

A virtuous person would have recognized that morally equating terrorist and murderers to people standing up for the rights of others would be egregious.  They would have showed compassion and even tried to bring the people together on a compromise instead of further dividing them apart.

Mike’s Post 1 – Week 4 Discussion 2

Prompt 1:

Is it possible for individuals to flourish if others with whom they are connected are not also flourishing?  Consider this with respect to Aristotle’s account of Eudaimonia, as well as the other readings and media.

Virtue ethics is an approach to moral and ethical questions that focuses on a person's character, or individual ethics of virtue (Mosser, 2013, p. 6.1). It is possible for individuals to flourish even though those they are connected are not flourishing. For example, in a marriage, both partners may not have Eudaimonia, but the one that does will still flourish, and through that partner the marriage will flourish. Is it better for those who are connected such as spouses, to both have Eudaimonia? I would say yes, but it is not necessary. Let us compare the question, “Is it possible for individuals to flourish if others with whom they are connected are not also flourishing?” to what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 7:14, “For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.” Basically, it only takes one to make the entire household holy and sanctified. Does this mean the sanctified household will not encounter problems? No, it does not, because being sanctified and holy does not equate to perfection.

Identify a community or practice in which you are involved in which the flourishing of the individual is tied to the flourishing of others.

One community that my wife and I are involved in where the flourishing of the individual is tied to the flourishing of others, is the APA Pool League. As APA team members, our flourishment is tied to the flourishment of our teammates. Another community where one person’s flourishing is tied to the flourishing of others, is work related communities, such as construction workers.

Does this require that we limit certain rights pertaining to the individual (for instance, the right to free speech or to pursue monetary gain), in order to promote the flourishing of the group within that context?  Be specific, and use examples when appropriate.

No, I do not think we must limit certain individual rights, such as right to free speech or pursuit of monetary gain, in order to promote flourishing of the group. Mosser, (2013), states, “The person who has Eudaimonia is the person who has acquired the correct conception of the virtues, individually and as a whole, and as such, offers us an example of what kinds of moral choices should be made.” Therefore, for the group to flourish, each individual must examine their own choices and behavior to see where they are doing the right thing and where they may need improvement (Mosser, 2013).
