Labor and Delivery Services:

You are the new manager of the Social Services Department of a small, 18-bed rural hospital within the Bright Road Health Care System. As a member of the ethics committee for the hospital, you have been asked by the CEO and CFO to contribute to an initial discussion about whether or not to continue having labor and delivery in the hospital. You will speak with Board members and hospital staff members to uncover the hospital, patient, and community impact of such a decision. You will submit their recommendation, along with their rationale, to the committee.

Equipment Purchase:

You are the CFO of small rural women's health center within Bright Road Health Care System. The center's physicians have approached you about purchasing a mammography 3D machine. The equipment is state-of-the-art and excellent for early diagnosis, but the women's health center has limited funds and currently does not have a large incidence of breast cancer diagnosis. In addition to thinking about the impact of the machine on early diagnosis and increasing revenue, you are keenly aware of the importance of keeping the young physicians happy, in order to retain staff. On the other hand, the Board of Directors has indicated they want to keep a tight control over frivolous spending, as they are uncertain how new regulations like the ACA will impact the solvency of the corporation. You will need to balance financial concerns, the authority of the Board of Directors, public relations/marketing, the wishes of medical staff, and future implications when making a decision.
