1. Write an essay analyzing the administrations of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Argentina. More specifically, examine the following questions: What accounts for their electoral victory? In the case of Cristina, include her election and re-election. What are their achievements/failures/challenges? How would you characterize democracy under the Kirchners? (Note: You must read Levitsky and Murillo’s article on “Argentina: from Kirchner to Kirchner” and Calvo and Murillo’s article on “Argentina: The Persistence of Peronism.”)  Please cite a few quotes from the articles.

2. Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian writer, argued that Mexico, under the rule of the PRI, had a “perfect dictatorship” from 1930’s until late 1990’s.Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Please take into consideration the following factors: political party system, electoral process, presidency, organization of social groups (such as unions), military, corruption, media, respect for human rights and tolerance for opposition, and social and economic policies.
