An annotated bibliography is like a works cited sheet, or reference list. It will list all the sources in your research paper in proper MLA format. However, you will have three additional paragraphs under each source.

  1. Paragraph one summarizes the source. The goal in paragraph one is to tell the reader the big picture idea that your source is talking about. Make sure the argument is clear. Your reader should not need to read the source to understand what it is about.
  2. Paragraph two assesses the source. The goal in this paragraph is to explain what type of source this is. Explain the strengths and limitations of this source.
  3. Paragraph three details how you will use the source in your paper. The goal in this paragraph is to make it clear why you chose this source.

Your annotated bibliography must have these three paragraphs for all sources you plan to use. If you end up changing or adding a source for your final research paper, you do not need to update the annotated bibliography.
